The recent Employee Ownership Learning Event held in September in Edinburgh was another success with one delegate saying, “The session exceeded my expectations. I felt what could become a very dry, boring subject was brought to life in an interesting and engaging way. I think the group dynamics also helped the session - having people from a variety of stages really helped the discussions.”
It was a fantastic group with everyone chatting and sharing experiences from the very start. There was quite a mix of experience in the room, with many companies newly into employee ownership and some who have been employee-owned for several years.
It was quite an intensive session, covering the legal and governance requirements of companies controlled by an EOT, and focused largely on the role of the EOT Trustee. The interaction from the group really enlivened the day. We explored how to assess board performance, one of prime responsibility of the Trust Board, and also looked at the challenges Trustees face.
A hot topic was on the transition period for exiting owners, and the leadership succession plans that result. This can be quite a vulnerable time for companies, as a much respected owner retires from a business and the decision making transfers to new hands.
We also spent a good deal of time looking at some cases where things had gone offtrack in companies, and how to avoid this happening.
As ever, the best part of the event was in the networking that took place, with people making connections and committing to keeping in touch with each other. There have been requests for a follow-up event – watch this space!
“I would highly recommend these sessions particularly to those starting their Employee Trustee journey. This is an important role which could be an intimidating experience, however the training session made the responsibilities of the role clear and the guidance and advice was delivered in a really accessible way. It was great to meet a community of other Trustees who I will be staying in touch with!” - Jenny Adams, Aspect
“This session should be compulsory for any companies new to Employee Ownership and Individuals who are new to the role of Trustee.“ - Douglas Murray, Harvey Maps
